Small Graces

A book of prayers and lessons for children and families.

Small Graces takes you through a garden of wisdom and devotion that spans generations. A book written to help you and your children give voice to spirituality and a resource for all those you love from their earliest years to adulthood. The illustrations which illuminate the pages are reproduced from individually hand carved printing blocks. Each illustrated page is bordered by an intricate pattern, its imagery chosen to represent the theme of its chapter.

For the first chapter, which focuses on ‘Greeting the Day’, the illustrated border is entwined with Morning Glories. For the second chapter, food and bounty are the theme and are represented by the woven patterning of the border. The third and closing chapter is devoted to prayers for the end of the day, for sleep and the border’s tumbling foliate reflects tumbling gently into sweet dreams.

A slim panel at the bottom of each border contains another illustration portraying an aspect of the prayers on its page. Children will delight in examining these lovely and lighthearted illustrations and adults will enjoy exploring them with their little ones, seeking the correlations between pictures and prayers.

The book’s large format allows it to open flat and is easy for children to handle. Our hardcover volume is made with high quality paper and a durable cloth binding to last a lifetime.

The Small Graces Swahili Language Edition

About halfway into the project of writing Small Graces, Bishop Alpha Mohamed of the Rift Valley Diocese in Tanzania came to Colorado Springs on sabbatical. I came to know and admire him and eventually decided to show him the manuscript for Small Graces. He was very interested in the project and offered to translate the manuscript (with the help of some of his family) into Swahili. The decision was made to produce a paperback (perfect bound) version for the families in the Rift Valley Diocese. Friends and family from around the country contributed large and small amounts of money to help fund the endeavor. We were able to send 3,300 copies of the book to Tanzania.
